Rise and Shine Names Karen Britton Executive Director

March 3, 2025, Annapolis, Maryland

Elizabeth Kinney, President of Rise and Shine Inc., announced the appointment of Karen Britton as the nonprofit organization's first Executive Director. Rise and Shine provides workforce training and jobs in the bakery industry to people with employment barriers.

“We have reached a stage in our growth where we need to hire a full-time Executive Director to oversee the increasing day-to-day operations of the organization. Karen’s experience in the nonprofit world and her passion for the population we serve makes her the ideal person to lead the organization into its next phase,” Kinney said.

Karen joins the team with experience working with underserved populations through United Way as a housing advocate, community engagement specialist, and resource manager. She has supervised over 130 volunteers at Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County and has worked closely with hundreds of businesses, social service agencies, and community organizations in Anne Arundel County. She also serves as a Commissioner on the City of Annapolis Affordable Housing and Community Equity Development Board. Her experience in grant writing, social media, and marketing, along with her having owned her own business, will be of great value as Rise and Shine expands its social enterprise initiatives in baked goods sales that will generate revenue to support the training program.

Kinney added, “We are very excited that Karen will be joining our team of five incredible staff members and 17 Board of Directors along with the more than 60 clients we serve annually.
